When you hear your muffler scraping on the ground or rattling while you are driving your vehicle, then there is a good chance that the straps that hold the muffler against the vehicle frame have rusted out and broken or the muffler bracket bolts have become loose. Tightening a loose muffler only takes a few supplies and tools and can be done in your own garage or driveway.

Step 1

Lie on your back under the rear end of your vehicle where the muffler is located.

Step 2

Fit the proper-sized wrench on the bolts that hold the front bracket of the muffler onto the exhaust pipe exiting the engine. Tighten the bolts clockwise.

Step 3

Push up on the muffler so it is flush with the vehicle frame.

Step 4

Wrap a steel zip tie around the rear of the muffler and around the frame of the vehicle just above the muffler. Run the end of the zip tie through the zip tie loop and pull it tight.
