Every engine requires a specific amount of engine coolant. Coolant, also called antifreeze or radiator fluid, circulates through your Hyundais engine. This regulates the temperature and prevents the engine from reaching temperatures that could damage it. Over time, it is common for coolant to evaporate or even leak a small amount of fluid from the overflow tank. When this happens, you have to put more coolant in your Hyundai.
Step 1
Press the hood release latch located on the drivers side lower kick panel of your Hyundai. Secure the hood open with the hood prop.
Step 2
Locate the coolant expansion (overflow) tank in the front, left of the engine bay. It is next to the oil dipstick, has a black cap and is tan in color.
Step 3
Inspect the fluid level indicator on the side of the tank. Look for the "F" for full and "L" for low. Do not allow the fluid level to go above the line for full. If you do, when the engine heats up, the fluid could purge from the tank. Mix a 50/50 solution of radiator fluid and distilled water in your mixing jug. Mix enough to fill the expansion tank.
Step 4
Open the lid for the expansion tank and drain the mixture of coolant into the expansion tank. Allow a few minutes for the fluid to drain into the radiator. Check the level of fluid in the expansion tank and add additional coolant as needed.
Close the lid on the expansion tank.
Tip
- Radiator fluid is toxic to people and animals. Properly secure any excess coolant in a sealed container.
Warning
- Coolant reaches temperatures exceeding 180 degrees. Do not open the expansion tank while the engine is hot. The steam produced by the coolant could burn you.
