Liens can be put on the titles of vehicles that are used as collateral for loans or if the owner of the vehicle owes a mechanic a significant amount of money for repairs done to the car or truck. The purpose of a lien is that the owner of the vehicle can not sell or get rid of the vehicle until the lien is paid off. If the lien is not paid off, the lien-holder may ultimately be able to sell the vehicle to recoup their money, depending on the circumstances of the original contract.
Step 1
Go to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles website. Download and out form BMV 3774, which is titled as an Application for Certificate of Title to a Motor Vehicle (see Resources).
Step 2
Fill out form 3774 with the information about the lien and lien holder included. Form 3774 must be filled out accurately in order to get the lien recorded on the title.
Submit form 3774 to the Clerk of Courts title office that is located in the county in which you live, along with the vehicle owners original title. Pay any required titling fees that may occur. As of 2011, the title lien notation costs $15. The lien-holder will be issued a new title to the vehicle, and the owner will be issued a memorandum title, which is a title that can be used for registration purposes but cannot be used to transfer ownership of the vehicle.
