Over the years Jeep has used several different electronically controlled automatic transmissions. The AW-4 is used on 1993 models only. The 42RE and 42RH come with six-cylinder models. The 44RE, 46RH and 46RE are used on 5.2L/5.9L V8 models. In 1999 the 45RFE was brought in on the 4.7L V8 engine. 2001 saw an update as the 545RFE transmission was put into use.
Locate the plate.
Step 1
Lay on the ground on either side of the Jeep.
Step 2
Slide under the Jeep to the transmission which is bolted to the motor.
Look for a metal plate attached to the transmission. The transmission number is located on the plate. It is the only number on the plate. EX. 42RE.
Service department.
Step 1
Look on the dash or the title for the VIN number. The technician can enter the VIN number to find out what transmission is in the Jeep. The VIN is a combination of 17 numbers and letters.
Step 2
Call a Jeep dealership service department.
Supply the VIN to the service technician.
