Tracking down the title history of an automobile in West Virginia can be done at a local branch of the West Virginia DMV or through the states online portal. Once you fill out the appropriate forms and submit the nominal fee, you will be given a title history; or if you choose, a duplicate title along with the history.
Requesting the title in person
Step 1
Go to your local West Virginia branch of the DMV. Request the Affidavit of Duplicate Title for a Vehicle or Watercraft.
Step 2
Fill out the Affidavit of Duplicate Title for a Vehicle or Watercraft completely, taking time to answer each question as fully as you can. You may need the VIN number or other identifying codes for the title search.
Present the completed form to the clerk along with the required fee, which was $10 as of 2010. The clerk will provide the title history and if you requested it, a duplicate title.
Requesting your title online
Step 1
Go to the West Virginia website and navigate to the Vehicle License Information section. Download the Affidavit of Duplicate Title for a Vehicle or Watercraft.
Step 2
Fill the form out online and then hit "Submit." You will be directed to the secure payment page where you must pay the fee with a valid credit or debit card. Hit "Submit."
