Vehicles equipped to tow other vehicles are required to have a special license plate. By law, tow trucks, which are commonly referred to as wreckers, are defined as vehicles that have permanently attached hoists or towing apparatuses, or a self-loading flatbed. The towing license plate allows vehicles that are being towed to be covered under the tow trucks insurance policy. Acquiring the plate is a matter of filing the proper forms and paying the applicable fees.
Step 1
Acquire the required insurance for your wrecker. State minimums are usually $100,000 in bodily injury coverage.
Step 2
Apply for a towing business license. This can be done through the Secretary of States office in your state. To get the license, you will have to submit your driving record and submit to a criminal background check, as well as provide proof of insurance.
File a Tow Truck License Plate Application Affidavit. This form is available from your states Department of Motor Vehicles. In many states the form can be downloaded from the DMV website. Once your form has been approved, you will receive the license plate.
