Contenu

A transmission cooler was an optional feature on the Jeep Cherokee. The transmission cooler consists of a small radiator bolted behind the engines radiator and two transmission cooler lines that extend from the second radiator to the transmission. The lines are a ing and return line. The transmission cooler uses coolant from the engine radiator. If you plan to remove the transmission cooler lines, you will first need to drain the radiator.

Step 1

Place a pan large enough to hold five gallons of coolant under the engines radiator. Open the petcock on the engines radiator with pliers and drain the coolant into the drain pan. Close the petcock once drained.

Step 2

Locate the smaller radiator behind the larger radiator and open the petcock on that radiator with pliers. Drain the coolant from the smaller radiator into the drain pan. Close the petcock once drained.

Step 3

Loosen the metal clamping nuts that secure the ing and return transmission cooler lines to the side of the radiator with an open-ended wrench. Pull the lines off of the radiator.

Follow both lines until you locate the mounting point on the transmission housing. Loosen the metal clamping nuts that secure the ing and return transmission cooler lines to the side of the transmission housing with an open-ended wrench. Pull the lines off of the transmission housing.

Items you will need

  • Drain pan
  • Pliers
  • Open-ended wrench set
