The golf cart was invented in 1962 by Merlin L. Halvorson. The golf cart allows golfers a more relaxing way of getting around the course verses walking and carrying their clubs. Like all mechanical devices, golf carts require maintenance and repair to operate properly. The drive axle for a golf cart rarely fails because of the low power of the motors. You may need to remove one to change the bearing or if a gear is stripped.
Step 1
Park the golf cart on a flat, solid surface. Place the wheel chocks in front of the front wheels. Jack up the rear of the golf cart with the car jack and place two jack stands under the rear end, supporting it with the tires off the ground.
Step 2
Unscrew the bolts that secure the rim on the hub. Pull off the tire and rim.
Step 3
Pull the cover off the drum brake and removing the bolts securing it to the hub.
Step 4
Pull the the "C" clip out with a pair of needlenoe pliers. The clip is is visible through the hole in the flange. Pull the hub from the axle.
Step 5
Screw the bearing puller into the center of the axle and wrap its arms around the back bearing housing. Tighten the bearing puller until the bearing is released.
Pull the axle from the golf car with your hands.
Tip
- Some bolts may be locked in place because of their age. Heat the bolts with a propane torch to assist in its removal.
