The hydraulic clutch on a Ford Ranger uses brake fluid to pressurize the clutch system and makes it easier to disengage the clutch from the transmission. If the clutch system runs out of fluid or the system runs low on fluid, the system will not work properly. You will not be able to change gears or disengage the clutch at all (in some cases). Before doing any service work, you need to diagnose the hydraulic clutch on your Ford Ranger.

Step 1

Open the hood and locate the clutch master cylinder. It is located to the left of the brake master cylinder on the firewall.

Step 2

Unscrew the cap on the clutch master cylinder reservoir tank and check the fluid. The fluid should be a clear brownish color. If it is not, you will need to flush the system.

Step 3

Check the fluid level. The fluid level should be between the upper and lower marks on the outside of the fluid reservoir tank.

Press on the clutch pedal. If there is little or no resistance, then there is a leak in the line somewhere or there is air in the line that needs to be bled out. If your clutch feels spongy, then you have air in the clutch fluid line.
