The Smart Diablo is a custom Smart Fortwo vehicle that is equipped with a powerful motorcycle engine. The Smart Fortwos weight and body dimension gave car enthusiasts the idea of pairing it with a powerful Suzuki motorcycle engine. This combination resulted in a fast small car. Several of these "Diablo Smart Cars" gained popularity in racing.

Smart Fortwo Specifications

The Smart Fortwo is a small car that can seat two passengers. It was introduced in 1998 at the Paris Motor Show, and it featured a turbocharged three-cylinder motor located in the rear of the vehicle. The 2010 model has a wheelbase of 73.5 inches, a height of 60.7 inches and a width of 61.4 inches. Its overall length is 106.1 inches, and its cargo capacity is 7.8 cubic feet. Equipped with its standard engine, the Fortwos gross weight is 2,315 pounds. Because of its measurements, the Smart Fortwo became a suitable base car for the modified Diablo Smart Car. Motorsport technicians transform the Fortwo into a Diablo by removing its base engine, replacing it with a Suzuki motorcycle sport engine, and adding a sport suspension system to further stabilize the vehicle.

Suzuki Hayabusa Engine

One of the engines installed in the Smart Fortwo to create the Diablo is the Suzuki Hayabusa engine. The Hayabusa engine is a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, inline four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1,299 cubic centimeters. Its bore and stroke are 3.19 inches by 2.48 inches, and its compression ratio is 11.0:1. It has a Keihin/Denso fuel injection system with a dual overhead cam (DOHC) fuel control. In 2008, this engines performance reached 194 horsepower at 9,500 rpm, with a torque of 114 pound-feet at 7,200 rpm.

Suzuki GSX-R 1000 Engine

Another engine used in the Diablo is the Suzuki GSX-R. Related to the Hayabusa engine, the GSX-R 1000 is also a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, inline four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 998cc. Its compression ratio is 12.5:1, while its bore and stroke are 2.89 inches by 2.32 inches. Like the Hayabusa, it comes with the DOHC fuel injection control system. The 2008 version of the engine has 185 horsepower at 12,000 rpm, and it produces a torque of 86 pound-feet at 10,000 rpm.
