The fuel filter in your 2004 VW Jetta should be replaced every 20,000 to 30,000 miles to avoid it clogging up over time. The filter is responsible for preventing debris in the gas tank from entering the fuel system itself. A clogged filter can cause many problems, from rough running and poor fuel economy to a car that won’t start at all. Replacing the fuel filter on your 2004 Jetta is a straightforward procedure.

Step 1

Park the vehicle on a flat surface in a well ventilated area. Lift the rear, passenger side of the vehicle with a jack and lower it onto a jack stand.

Step 2

Locate the fuel filter, which is under the passenger side of the car, near the fuel tank and the right rear wheel. Loosen the clamp around the body of the filter that holds it to the filter bracket with a screwdriver.

Step 3

Place a container under the filter to catch any spilled fuel. Use a screwdriver to press the tab on the quick-connect fitting on the line on the front of the filter. Release the quick-connect fitting slowly to allow the fuel pressure to bleed off then pull the line off of the filter. Wipe up any spilled fuel.

Step 4

Release the quick-connect on the fuel line that goes to the back of the filter by pressing the tab on the fitting with the screwdriver. Pull the filter off of the line while holding the release tab on the connect fitting. Slide the filter towards the front of the car to release it from the bracket clamp.

Step 5

Install the new filter the opposite of removal, tightening the band for the bracket around the body of the filter. Install the fuel lines by sliding the lines onto the filter until the quick-connect makes a clicking sound.

Lower the car to the ground. Turn the key to the “On” position but do not start the engine. Do this three or four times to prime the fuel back into the fuel system then start the engine.
