The ignition cylinder on a Chevy Truck allows the ignition switch to activate and an electrical signal to the starter motor. The motor then starts the engine. However, when the ignition cylinder jams, you wont be able to start your truck. At this point, youll need to buy a new ignition cylinder from a General Motors dealership. Since most Chevy trucks now use a transponder key, a special ignition cylinder has to be made for your truck.
Step 1
Remove the screws on the underside of the steering column cover.
Step 2
Pull the cover down.
Step 3
Push the punch pin up into the access hole under the ignition cylinder.
Step 4
Pry the ignition lock out of the steering column with a flat tip screwdriver.
Install the new ignition cylinder into the steering column until it snaps into place. Then reassemble the steering column trim.
