The make of your car is the manufacturer’s name, such as Toyota, while the model is the brand, such as RAV 4. You have a couple of ways to find the make and model of your car:
- Read the back side of the car for the model and check the front logo for the make.
- Request a vehicle history report.
In New York, for example, you can also get the make, year and model of your car from the Title Application/ Vehicle Registration, Form MV-82, which you filled out when registering your car. To get your make and model through your vehicle history report, follow several steps that will include identifying your vehicle identification number.
Check the VIN.
The vehicle identification number is found in your car on the driver’s side either on the door or somewhere between the dashboard and windshield. It can also be located in your car title and registration.
Acquire the vehicle history report.
Locate your local motor vehicles agency and visit. Have your car title, VIN and proof of identification. You will be issued with your vehicle history report. Instead of visiting your local agency, you can go to the agency’s website, as many issue the report online. The DMV.org website also offers a link to CarFax, where you can obtain your vehicle history report. Or, visit websites like Autocheck where you can access your report for a fee. You will be need to register for an account at websites such as Autocheck, ranging from $10 to $100, at the time of publication.
Warnings
Be on the lookout for websites providing free VIN searches and history reports, as they are often scams or do not provide complete information.
Read the vehicle history report.
Go through the report to determine the make and model of your car. They will be listed among other important information contained in the report. Check also for other items contained in the report for future needs, such as past ownership, maintenance of the vehicle, liens existing on the car, odometer settings and car title.
