Emergencies can make us do things we wouldnt normally consider. One of these things may be breaking out your car window: the severity of your situation might outweigh the cost of damages you do to your vehicle. Perhaps you locked your keys in your car at the grocery store and you must get back home because of an emergency. Maybe your girlfriends dad told you to get lost or get dead, and your keys are locked in the car. You need to be safe when you attempt to break the car glass, though, or you may end breaking more than just your window. If you try to break the window by simply hitting it with your fist, you may end up breaking your hand.
Step 1
Look around you for anything you can use to break out the window. Never use your bare hands. Search for something that is heavy and blunt. A brick is great; a cinder block is OK; a 2-by-4 will suffice if nothing heavier, like a heavy chunk of concrete, is available. If youre inside the car and you must break the glass to get out, you likely wont have a suitable blunt object in the car. Youll need to kick the glass out. Lie on your back in the seat, with the bottoms of your heels against the glass. Wear shoes with thick, hard soles. Then rear back, pulling your knees to your chest and kick the window with a stomping motion, striking with the heels.
Step 2
Take careful aim at the window. This way you will not miss and injure yourself or your vehicle. The window is expensive enough to replace on its own, putting a large dent or scratch into the metal or paint job of your car just adds insult to injury.
Break out the passenger window of the car if possible. Jab at it with the blunt object or throw the blunt object while standing several feet away. This way you will not have broken glass all over your seat. Turn your face away from the glass as it shatters.
Tips
- Smashing your car window should be only a last resort. Determine if there is any other way to resolve the emergency that does not pose damage to your vehicle or risk to your own well-being.
- If the glass cuts you as you smash the window, do not ignore the wound. Use a clean cloth to bind the wounds until you can seek medical attention.
- Consider purchasing an emergency window punch, a device designed specifically for breaking a window in case of emergency. Store the punch in an easy-to-access location in your car. These are designed to punch the window from the inside, such as when you need to get out of the car.
Warning
- If the car is submerged, you may need to wait for the car to fill with water before breaking the glass. While letting the car fill with water may be a scary concept, having the glass implode into the car may be more dangerous than the water.
