If you take the highways when driving from New Jersey to New York, you may have to pay toll fees depending on your route.. Although there are no tolls to enter New York state from New Jersey, there are tolls to enter New York City from New Jersey, and these are unavoidable since you must take either a bridge or tunnel to enter. The only tolls you may have when driving from New Jersey to New York are on two major highways and you can avoid these by taking back roads.
Step 1
Map out your route on a road map. The only toll roads in New Jersey are the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike. You can avoid taking the Garden State Parkway by using Route 9 and you can avoid the New Jersey Turnpike by using Route 130.
Step 2
Use an online map website. Place your starting point and destination into the directions, then choose the option to avoid toll roads. The website will provide you with a route to take to avoid taking toll roads.
Step 3
Use a global positioning system (GPS) device in your car. When you ask for directions to your destination, indicate that you would like to avoid highways with tolls when driving from New Jersey to New York. Most GPS systems are equipped with this option.
Enter New York State using any road except the Garden State Parkway, which is the only toll road going from New Jersey to New York.
