The towing capacity of a vehicle is a careful calculation. There are many factors that affect the towing capacity of the vehicle, with the engine, transmission, suspension, chassis and frame strength the main factors. The 2004 GMC Envoy, like all vehicles, has a standard-towing and a maximum-towing capacity. The standard capacity is what the truck can handle consistently, whereas the maximum capacity is the most the vehicle should ever tow and should not be done on a consistent basis.
SLE
The SLE trim line of the GMC Envoy has a standard towing capacity of 5,300 lb. and a maximum of 6,300 lb., when equipped with two-wheel drive. The four-wheel-drive model drops to a standard capacity of 5,100 lb. and a maximum capacity of 6,100 lb.
XL SLE
The XL SLE version of the 2004 Envoy has a lower standard towing than the SLE. The XL SLE can handle 5,000 lb. with two-wheel drive and 4,800 lb. when equipped with four-wheel drive. The maximum towing, however, is increased. It can handle up to 7,100 lb. with two-wheel drive and 6,700 lb. with four-wheel drive.
XUV SLE
When equipped with two-wheel drive, the 2004 Envoy XUV SLE has a standard towing capacity of 5,300 lb. and a maximum capacity of 6,300 lb. The four-wheel-drive version has a standard towing capacity of 5,200 lb. and a maximum capacity of 6,400 lb.
SLT
The SLT model has a standard towing capacity of 5,100 lb. and a maximum capacity of 6,100 lb. with a four-wheel-drive platform. The two-wheel-drive version can tow a maximum of 6,300 lb. and has a standard towing capacity of 5,300 lb.
XL SLT
The 2004 GMC Envoy XL SLT can tow a maximum of 6,700 lb. and has a standard capacity of 4,800 lb. with four-wheel drive. In two-wheel drive, its standard towing capacity is 5,000 lb. and its maximum capacity is 7,100 lb.
