The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for the 1964 Corvette is located in three places. It is not duplicated in three places--different parts of the VIN are in each place. The serial number and style information is located on a stainless steel plate welded to the body underneath the glove box. Information about the engine is stamped on the block, and body information is on a plate on the engine side of the firewall.
Under the Glove box
The 1964 Corvette was the first "modern looking" Corvette--the hood louvers were eliminated and the rear window had a single pane. The first part of the VIN is located under the glove compartment on a stainless-steel plate welded to the frame and hard to tamper with. The very first digit of the VIN at this location is a "4" if the body is a 1964 Corvette. Digits 2 and 3 will be 08 if the body is a Corvette. Digit 6 should be an S indicating that it was assembled in St. Louis, MO--all 1964 Corvettes were. Digits 7 through 12 uniquely identify the body--they were different for every Corvette body. The numbers run from 100001 to 122229.
One the Engine Block
Another part of the VIN is stamped on the engine and contains information relative to the engine. The first seven digits are a serial number for the engine, starting with 0001001. The 8th character tells where the engine was built--F for Flint, MI and T for Tonawanda, NY. All the engines were 327 cubic inch displacement V8s with 4-barrel carburetors. Character 9 is R for manual transmissions and S for automatic transmissions. The 10th character is C for 250 hp with 10.5 to 1 compression, D for 300 hp, 10.5 to 1 compression. E for 365 hp, 11.0 to 1 compression and F for 375 hp 11.0 to 1 compression. P, Q, R and U are like C, D, E and F except they have air conditioning. T is the same as E and X is the same as F.
On the Firewall
The factory options are listed on a metal plate attached to the engine side of the firewall--any aftermarket additions will not be on this list. 898 indicates leather seats, A01 indicates tinted windows, A31 indicates power windows, C60 indicates air conditioning, G81 indicates Positraction, J50 indicates power brakes, K66 indicates transistorized ignition, N03 indicates power steering and U69 indicates AM/FM radio.
