Not all cars are the same. While every engine uses fuel and oil, the levels and recommendations for the types of fluids vary by manufacturer. 1996 Toyota Corolla offers two engine sizes: a 1.6L four-cylinder and a 1.8L four-cylinder. While made by the same company, these two engines have different fluid level requirements.

1.8L Four-Cylinder Engine

The manufacturer recommendations for the oil change are to use four quarts of Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) 5W-30 oil with Fram PH4967 or equivalent oil filter. The oil drain plug torques to 25 foot-pounds of torque.

1.6L Four-Cylinder Engine

The 1.6L variation of the 1996 Corolla uses the same PH4967 or equivalent oil filter but only requires 3.2 quarts of SAE 5W-30 oil. The torque specifications for the oil drain plug are also 25 foot-pounds of torque.

Overall Recommendations

Any vehicle over 10 years old or that has logged 50,000 miles or more holds slightly different requirements than a newer vehicle. You should use a high-mileage, synthetic or semi-synthetic engine oil with a high-mileage or extra-guard oil filter. These products contain elements that help recondition old seals and prevent oil leaks or damage to the engine.
