Chevys two-wheel drive C Series trucks have been hauling loads since 1960. The 2004 model C4500 offers improvements over previous models and a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of up to 17,500 lbs. with a variety of body configurations.
Powertrain
Classified by the EPA as a Class 4 size vehicle, the 2004 model-year C4500 could be ordered with either a Vortec 8100 OHV gas-powered V8 or a Duramax 6600 OHV diesel V8. The gas engine, mated to a ZF S6-650 six-speed manual transmission, produces up to 325 horsepower at 3,000 RPM and a peak of 450 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 RPM. The Duramax diesel powerplant, mated to an Allison 1000 six-speed automatic, tops out at 300 horsepower at 3,000 RPM and 520 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,800 RPM.
Configurations
Available configurations for the 2004 Chevy C4500 include the one to three passenger regular cab (with an available 128- to 206-inch wheelbase), a crew cab with seating for up to six (169- to 235-inch wheelbase), motor home cutaway chasis (165.5- to 213.5-inch wheelbase), a commercial cutaway chasis (165.5- to 195.5-inch wheelbase), and school bus chasis (165.5- to 195.5-inch wheelbase).
Drivetrain
Front suspension for the C4500 incorporates an I-beam axle, parabolic tapered-leaf springs and 35-mm shock absorbers. The back includes a full-floating axle, multi-leaf springs, tapered-leaf springs, 35-mm shock absorbers, and a 44.5-mm stabilizer bar attached to hub-piloted steel 19.5-inch-by-6-inch eight-hole wheels. Stopping power comes from four-wheel hydraulic 15-inch disc brakes with four-channel ABS.
Other Measurements
Standing 90.6 inches tall, the C4500 is 95.8 inches wide and has 8.4 inches of ground clearance. A 25-gallon fuel tank is standard with options increasing capacity to 60 gallons. Turning diameter is 38.6 feet for the regular cab and 47 feet for the crew cab.
